Lisle Kulbach stands in front of Dölauer Straße 46 in Halle. Her grandfather Paul Frankl, who emigrated to the USA in 1938, lived here. After the end of the war, his daughter Johanna and granddaughter Lisle Kulbach followed him. In the USA, Lisle began to reappraise her family’s history. She collects letters, interviews living relatives and writes a book, told from the perspective of individual family members. In Germany, art historian Katja Schneider-Stief begins to research Paul Frankl’s story. Together they reconstruct the history of the Frankls and Lisle’s origins. A friendship grows out of their collaboration.

A film by Anne-Victoria Hofacker, Mario Apel and Mathis Schneider.
